Off of first impression, the first thing that strikes me
about this graphic novel is that it is a very personal piece of work. Already without the knowledge of how this is
taken from Art Spiegelman and his father’s experiences, it is quite easy to
tell that a wide majority (maybe even all) of its content is pulled right out
of real life. The small quirks, speech
patterns, or even unique frustrations in combination with the art all make for
an exceptional experience. It is almost
as though you are eavesdropping on someone’s private at-home conversation; it
felt extremely personable. In comparison
to other works of literature, this book most definitely should be treated and
appreciated as the essential piece of literature that it is; as it is surely
one of the most emotional books I have read.
